McAlpine wins £228m Glasgow campus

29 Jan 13 Sir Robert McAlpine has been selected as preferred bidder to build City of Glasgow College’s new £228m campus developments.

McAlpine, bidding as Glasgow Learning Quarter (GLQ), beat BAM and Laing O’Rourke in the bidding.

The aim is to start construction this summer. The college must first apply for planning permission from Glasgow City Council and finalise its funding strategy.

The college has also published images of how the campuses designed by Reiach & Hall and by Michael Laird Architects, will look in three years’ time.

The plans include new buildings in the centre of Glasgow, on Cathedral Street and on Thistle Street, designed to cater for around 40,000 students and 1,200 members of staff.

The project is funded by a mix of public and private finance, with funding support from the Scottish government via the Scottish Funding Council and from the City of Glasgow College’s financial reserves. The European Investment Bank has in principle approved up to £100m.
