McAuliffe pulls down Carvers' fire-damaged depot

16 Apr 12 Demolition contractor McAuliffe Group has started phase one works to the Carvers Building Supplies warehouse, offices and showrooms in Wolverhampton, which was gutted by fire six weeks ago.

Phase one of demolition works involves a process of initial site forensics and the design and implementation of a traffic management system. Managing director John McAuliffe said: “The speed of demolition is critical to the rebuild, but demolition works of this scale also takes time and planning to ensure that work can progress safely and uninterrupted, but with the absolute minimum local disruption. We’ve got some pretty big machinery on-site, with some weighing in at over 55 tonnes, to tackle the mangled steelwork, but some elements required careful dismantling, removal and storage for investigation in relation to the cause of the fire.”

Equipment on site includes a Cat 345B exacavator from McAuliffe's own fleet.

Carvers Building Supplies, a family run business, had been trading in various forms on the site for more than 100 years until the fire hit on 29 February 2012, ripped through the site causing widespread damage that now requires complete demolition and removal before new work can commence rebuilding the warehouse and buildings.

Carver Building Supplies managing director Henry Carver said: “It’s heart-breaking to see the site in this state, but we are determined to rebuild the business and the demolition works is a good first step.”
