McLaughlin & Harvey wins £13.4m Belfast school contract

28 Apr 11 Northern Irish contractor McLaughlin & Harvey has begun construction work on a new school in Belfast, having won the contract with a bid more than 20% below estimate.

The Newtownabbey-based company started on the new Strathearn Girls School in Belmont Road in March under a £13.4m contract. The initial estimated value of the contract had been £17.0m.

The project, which was approved as long ago as 2003, includes a 10,100 sq m new school and a 1,600 sq m refurbishment involving demolition of some of the remaining buildings on the existing campus.  Site works include the provision playing fields and sports facilities. 

It is planned that the first phase of 32 classrooms will be ready for occupation in September 2012 and the completion date of the whole project is set for September 2014.
