Bentley Works has been the home to Cementation, Skanska’s ground engineering subsidiary, since 1922. It has perhaps the most extensive range of piling plant in the UK, including fabrication, machine, paint, fitting and electrical shops, plus maintenance for Skanska’s specialist fleet of rigs and cranes. The facility is now getting an upgrade to help Skanska develop a northern hub from which to expand its business.

Mr Fallon met the nine apprentices employed on site and took a tour of existing workshops and the construction site.

Skanska says that a whole-life cost analysis of the project ensures that the ‘green’ approach to construction of the building will pay for itself. The new workshops will use 40% less energy than standard and the office accommodation 25% less energy.

The construction project is due to be completed in 2015.
