More layoffs possible at US housebuilder Standard Pacific

22 Jun 11 Over the course of the housing slump, US homebuilder Standard Pacific Corp has let hundreds of employees go and the layoffs may not be over yet.

Standard Pacific’s leaders are talking about whether the company can make do with still fewer employees than its current 760, chief executive officer Ken Campbell told the Reuters Global Real Estate & Infrastructure Summit.

The number is down from 2,580 in 2006, when home prices peaked, but Campbell told Reuters the tough times are not over yet for homebuilders even as the housing slump approaches its fifth anniversary.

Standard Pacific, the 11th-largest homebuilder in the USA in 2010, operates in eight states with a focus on California and on the higher end of the market.
