Morgan Sindall picked for £21m Sunderland Uni framework

9 Mar 12 Morgan Sindall has been picked for a £21m major works framework for the University of Sunderland.

As part of the framework, Morgan Sindall’s team in Durham will undertake a range of design, construction and refurbishment projects for the university. The programme of improvements will include a £3.5m redevelopment of the university’s Priestman building to accommodate the fine arts, performing arts, culture and social sciences disciplines.

The work will incorporate a new entrance, art gallery, teaching and learning spaces, arts studios and workshops. There will be improvements to the building infrastructure including energy efficient lighting, heating and data connections as well as a new roof and windows, continuing the university’s push to achieve its carbon reduction targets.

The framework will also see the delivery of the second phase of the campus’ £6m new science complex.

Morgan Sindall was awarded a place on the previous framework at the university which saw it deliver various projects including the design and build of CitySpace, the university’s £12m sport and social facility.

Iain Garfield, head of estates services at the University of Sunderland, said: “We are delighted to be able to re-establish our partnership with Morgan Sindall. Together we have undertaken significant developments on both the City and Sir Tom Cowie campuses throughout the previous framework and will soon be embarking on the next phase of these developments. The success of these projects relies on a strong partnership with the framework contractor and in their tender presentation Morgan Sindall clearly showed a willingness to develop that partnership to a new level.”
