The market, to be built on a 27-acre site, will hold 300 sheep pens and 150 cattle pens. The building will comprise a steel frame with timber-cladding and include a lorry and car park, offices and a café.

The new trading facilities will serve the Monmouthshire farming community following the closure of Abergavenny livestock market. The closure of the market is part of a wider regeneration scheme of the town.

Completion is scheduled for late summer, with the aim of transferring Abergavenny livestock market in the autumn.

Morgan Sindall operations manager Tom Davies said: “We are pleased to be a part of this significant project for Monmouthshire County Council, which will provide the local farming community with modern livestock market facilities.

“A project of this size will have a significant impact on the local economy and we always seek to support the communities in which we work. We will be aiming to appoint around 80 per cent of our subcontractors from the local supply-chain during this project.”
