NCC to build uni at ex-Carlsberg brewery

8 Feb 13 NCC has been commissioned to build a new campus, housing, offices and retail space for the first development phase of Copenhagen’s Carlsberg Byen area.

Carlsberg Byen will be built on Carlsberg’s former brewery area in the west of the city. The Carlsberg project has an overall area of 101,000m2 with nearly 60,000m2 set to become a new campus for University College Copenhagen (UCC), which will concentrate all of its operations in Carlsberg Byen. When completed, more than 10,000 students and 800 employees will be based in the area.

The client is the property development company Carlsberg Byen and the order value is approximately SEK1.5bn (£151m).

In addition to the educational premises, the project includes 6,500m2 of retail, 3,500m2 of offices, 15,000 m2 of residential space and nearly 20,000 m2 of basement area.

“I am delighted that we will be involved in building and developing the first phase of the Carlsberg Byen area,” said NCC Construction Danmark president Klaus Kaae.

“The first phase of the development of Carlsberg Byen will essentially realize our vision of creating a vibrant city district with a mix of stores, housing, offices and cultural operations, which will also benefit residents and investors in 25 years’ time,” says Lars Holten, president of the development company, Carlsberg Byen.

Project planning of Carlsberg Byen has already begun and construction is scheduled to start in summer 2013. The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion at mid-2016 and the entire project will be delivered in early 2017.

NCC has experience of developing former brewery areas in Copenhagen, having won a contract in 1998 to redevelop Tuborg’s former production area in Hellerup.
