He joins in early 2015 and will take over from Robin Gisby, who has decided to leave next year.
Chief executive Mark Carne said that Mr Hufton had “a wealth of experience of running railways, maintenance, assets and other major infrastructure around the world” but was now taking on “one of the most challenging jobs in the industry – to keep the trains running on time, whilst developing the network, delivering further safety improvements and reducing costs by a fifth”.
Phil Hufton will be paid a salary of £425,000 with a maximum bonus opportunity of 20%.
