New BIM data standard launched

5 Apr 13 Software provider Planon has introduced a new building information modelling (BIM) standard for facilities management.

CobieLite is a new data exchange format designed to make the automated information exchange between BIM systems and integrated workplace management systems (IWMS) faster and easier. Planon has finalised an implementation of CobieLite in collaboration with the US Army (Corps of Engineers) and the buildingSmart alliance.

The new format is designed to provide data in areas such as building maintenance and sustainability initiatives.

CobieLite uses XML based file formats and provides an alternative to the existing Cobie spreadsheet standard.

The ability to exchange data between BIM models and IWMS is said to allow for significant cost savings on building lifecycle costs. The BIM systems provide data to IWMS for management issues such as maintenance management, refurbishment and sustainability management.

Planon chief technology officer Erik Jaspers said: “With CobieLite, we are well on our way to creating a powerful BIM information exchange standard that will deliver vital information to IWMS solutions across the globe. As such, we are looking forward to sharing and extending more details of this new standard and expect to see significant uptake of the CobieLite standard once it has been published.”
