New home registrations remain steady

24 Jun 11 Latest figures from the National House Building Council (NHBC) show that housebuilders registered a similar number of new homes in May 2011 as they did in May 2010.

Last month 10,841 newly-built homes were registered. This was pretty much the same as the 10,870 regsistered in May 2010, but was up 29% month on month, compared to April 2011.

NHBC is the UK’s leading new home warranty and insurance provider. Chief executive Imtiaz Farookhi said: “May’s registration figures remain steady with those seen in 2010 and are somewhat higher than registrations reported at the beginning of the year. During recent weeks, feedback from housebuilders has revealed that uncertainty over proposed planning policies continues to make forecasts for the rest of the year difficult.  However, a shred of optimism is seeping back in the industry, in part due to the Government’s announcement of public land becoming more readily available for housing development.”

During the rolling quarter from March to May 2011, new homes registered totalled 32,562, marginally ahead of the 32,352 in the same period last year. NHBC statistics for the period show that private sector registrations were down 2% (to 20,559) when compared with the same period a year ago (20,877). Public sector registrations were up 5%, from 11,475 a year ago to 12,003 this quarter.
