The P6870C paver was launched in the UK at the Plantworx exhibition last year.

MB Surfacing said that it chose the machine primarily based on the service it had received over the past two years for its ABG 6870.

Managing director Martin Bell said: “We have been certainly impressed with the performance, reliability and the quality of our existing 6870. Careful consideration was given to the overall package from Volvo including not only the new machine, but the aftermarket product support.

“My operating crews appreciate the machine’s low noise levels, manoeuvrability and easy to use controls. Underpinning all of that is the excellent level of service support we get from the team at Volvo which is why we’ve decided to add the latest wheeled paver to our fleet.”

The new P6870C wheeled paver has many of the features originally introduced on the ABG 6870, such as continuous independent traction control over all six wheels. Now powered by a Volvo D6 Stage IIIB compliant 175hp engine, the P6870C additionally has the new EPM II electronic paver management system with a ‘settings management’ function that allows the operator to store up to 12 settings for parameters such as screed temperature, tamping & vibrating, conveyor, and auger & paving speeds.

Tractive forces are automatically adjusted according to the weight of material in the machine’s 12-tonne capacity hopper. As an added safety feature, MB Surfacing has specified fitment of traction isolator switches that are mounted on either side of the hopper. In an event of an emergency or an operator working in front of the machine, the isolator switches stop the machine moving.

The P6870C has a variable screed width of between 2.5m and 5m in standard configuration but can be fitted with optional extensions to provide a width of 9m. The machine has a theoretical output of up to 700 tonnes per hour at varying screed widths and depths.

Its ‘active steering’ feature gives it an inside turning radius of 2.5m.
