Improving infrastructure is seen by the state as key to creating new jobs. A key component of the legislation was the governor’s plan to use the Ohio Turnpike to generate US$1.5bn (£1bn) for critical transportation projects, especially those in Northern Ohio.

“I am proud to have been a joint sponsor for this very important piece of legislation,” said Ohio House of Representatives member Bill Patmon. “This legislation gives Ohio a unique opportunity to keep promises made by past administrations to improve roads, bridges, and highways. In other words, this gives Ohio a chance to let Ohio roads fix Ohio roads.”

Patrick Sink, who represents the local area’s members of the International Union of Operating Engineers, said: “Local 18 members are both excited and eager to start work on the future infrastructure projects that will be afforded them by the passage of House Bill 51 for years to come. Governor Kasich and members of the General Assembly, thank you for your vision and commitment to create the funding for Ohio's infrastructure projects, while retaining Ohio's asset of the Turnpike and producing thousands of jobs in the heavy highway construction industry in Ohio.”

"I view the passage of HB 51 as a win-win with the real potential to revitalise our state," said Sandy Barber, Fulton County recorder and member of the Ohio Turnpike Commission. "The Turnpike Commission is essentially being left to operate as it has for nearly the last 60 years, while at the same time there is an opportunity to expand this asset and spur additional projects throughout the state. We have an obligation to maintain our existing infrastructure and expand with our growing transportation needs. This legislation will make sure that happens."
