The RO13,582,945 (£26m) agreement also makes provision for the consultant to train Omani engineers to help them gain experience in the design of railway projects. Ten Omani university graduates will travel to Roma in Italy next month for training under a special training programme to prepare them to become the nucleus of Oman Railway Company.
Minister of transport and communications Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Futaisi said that geographic and geological surveys for the project have already begun. The prequalification tender for contractors will be published soon with the aim of awarding the first construction contract early in 2015.
