Planning application drawn up for Walkie Talkie glare solution

22 Jan 14 Developer Land Securities is aiming to submit a planning application next month to fix problems with solar glare on its 20 Fenchurch Street building in the City of London, the so-called Walkie Talkie.

The £200m building hit the headlines last summer when the convex curvature of its façade reflected the rays of the sun onto the streets below so powerfully that it reportedly started fires and even melted the bodywork of a black Jaguar XJ car.

A temporary scaffold screen was erected in front of the 37-storey building in the immediate aftermath. The developer has been saying for two months that it was close to finding a permanent solution.

Land Securities said today: “A planning application for the solution to the solar glare issue will be submitted next month.”

It gave no details of what the solution was, however.

Land Securities also said that building was now close to being fully let, with just 42,700 sq ft out of the total 677,000 sq ft of office space still available. Handover of the pre-let office floors is on schedule for April.
