PM’s Indian visit: Motts to design Hyderabad metro stations

19 Feb 13 Mott MacDonald has been appointed as detailed design engineer for six stations on the Hyderabad metro in India.

The announcement was made during British PM David Cameron’s trade visit to India. Mott MacDonald was appointed by Larsen & Toubro, which is implementing the Hyderabad metro development in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Covering a total distance of 71.16km, the INR164bn (£1.95bn) Hyderabad metro rail network comprises three corridors and 66 stations and will be capable of carrying 60,000 passengers per hour at peak times. Power will be fed back into the grid through regenerative braking supplying 45% of the energy required.

Mott MacDonald will provide architectural, structural, and public health design services for three interchange stations at Ameerpet, Parade Grounds and the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station. The consultancy will also design three other stations located at Panjagutta, Hi-Tech City, and Jubilee Hills Checkpost. Building information modelling (BIM) will be used, with benefits including faster project delivery, enhanced sustainability and improved whole life performance.

Mott MacDonald’s project director Karthikeyan Ramalingam said that mass rapid transit has become a key area for infrastructure development in the major cities of India. “At present, metro projects are being implemented in seven Indian cities and Mott MacDonald is involved in all of these. Our appointment builds upon our existing work for Larsen and Toubro as detailed design consultants on the Chennai Metro Rail project.”

Construction of the entire scheme is due to be completed by the end of 2017.
