The involvement of the IPCC follows mounting evidence that both the police and the security forces were involved to some degree in the blacklisting of construction workers via the Consulting Association.
In a statement, the Met Police has confirmed to The Construction Index: “In November 2012 the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) received an allegation of an alleged breach of the Data Protection Act by police. Due to the nature of the complaint it was initially non-recorded. However, this decision was reviewed and amended by the DPS following an appeal by the complainant.
“An investigation is now being carried out under the supervision of the Independent Police Complaints Commission. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further at this time.”
Construction union Ucatt was swift to welcome the news. General secretary Steve Murphy said: “This is a major step forward in discovering the full truth about blacklisting and winning justice for blacklisted workers.
“As more evidence emerges about the extent of the State’s involvement in blacklisting construction workers, it is essential that the investigation is followed by a full public inquiry into the vile and disgusting practice of blacklisting. Those whose lives were ruined must be given the full facts.”
