Polypipe bespoke fabrications used in Cheapside CSO project

17 Mar 11 Polypipe Civils, manufacturer of plastic drainage, sewer, cable protection and water management products, has provided a fit-for-purpose drainage solution helping in the consolidation of three existing CSO chambers into one, for Severn Trent Water in Digbeth, Birmingham.

Tasked with connecting the huge CSO chamber to the flap valve/pre outfall chamber – a very large structure in itself - Polypipe Civils supplied two of its Ridgistorm-XL pipes, in diameters 1800mm and 1200mm. The pipes are designed as a bespoke solution to suit each individual project by analysing the site conditions and installation parameters. With the help of state of the art software, the technical department was able to identify a lower stiffness classification of SN1 resulting in a cost-effective solution that was neither over nor under specified.

Polypipe also supplied four bespoke bends which were required due to the confined space on site and the complexity of the structure in and around the chambers. The bespoke nature of which allowed the WMS technical department to plan and design the entire pipe structure from just four co-ordinates.

Commenting on the reasons for choosing Polypipe Civils to carry out the work and supply of the pipe, Phil Newsum of GF Tomlinson & Sons, Derby said:

“Having worked with Polypipe Civils in the past, we were confident the WMS team would understand the complexities of the project and possess the ability to value engineer the detail and design specifications. The on-site support we received from Polypipe for was fantastic, especially with regard to the electro-fusion jointing. Not only did the bespoke design meet our specifications exactly but the solution allowed for an air tight, step free seal – an important requirement for foul sewers systems.

“Our ability to construct the bends off-site allowed for a much quicker installation time which is of primary importance to the client.” Said Luke Dekonski, Specification Engineer, Polypipe Civils. “Also our use of plastics was paramount to the success of this project – as a result of the reduced plan area it would have been almost impossible to create the required bends out of more traditional materials such as concrete and so enabled us to meet the client’s specifications in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner.”
