Working closely with the groundworker on-site, Expanded, on behalf of main contractors Laing O’ Rourke, Polypipe Civils supplied 23 bespoke manhole chambers and catchpits, 150m3 of Polystorm modular cells and over 1,700 metres of Ridgidrain drainage pipe in various diameters from 150 – 375mm. A Stormcheck flow-control chamber from Polypipe Civils was also installed on the project to manage the flow of surface water run-off from the attenuation solution back into the existing drainage network to prevent localised flooding.
Polypipe Civils’ technical department provided drawing take-offs for the project to assist with the design of the attenuation solution. Original specifications for the project included concrete chambers constructed on-site, however Polypipe Civils were able to demonstrate a significant time saving through the use of its plastic, pre-fabricated manholes and catchpits - each of the 23 chambers installed on the project saved Expanded’s installation team two days.
“This has been an interesting project to be involved with given the range of products we have provided,” adds Rachel Smith, Marketing Manager at Polypipe Civils. “Our pre-fabricated plastic manholes and catchpits are supplied to site ready for installation and can help to reduce the overall construction programme.
We find that at the specification stage of a project the overall installed cost of products is sometimes ignored in favour of unit costs, but the time savings generated by Expanded on this particular scheme are clear.”
Polypipe Civils’ products were installed on-site in January 2010. The new Advanced Learning Centre forms part of the £1 billion Barnsley Building Schools for the Future scheme that will deliver 11 new schools in the region.
