Pothole emergency fund: Where the money is going

21 Mar 14 Councils across England have been told how much they will receive from the extra £183.5m that the government has made available to help repair local roads damaged by recent heavy rains.

This is an emergency payment to help repair an estimated 3.3 million potholes following the wettest winter on record.

It is in addition to the £200m pothole repair fund for which councils will compete next year, as announced in the chancellor’s budget statement this week.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said the money would “help make a real difference to the millions of road users and residents across England who rely on local roads”.

The extra money is being distributed now to ensure that repairs can be started as soon as possible, so that the majority of the damage to be fixed ahead of the summer holidays.

116 local highway authorities in England will receive a share of the funding, along with a £10m one-off payment to Transport for London to distribute to London Boroughs.
