The new building is expected to cost £22m to construct plus an additional £25m to put together the five medical research teams that will fill it.
University College London (UCL) and the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust completed the £6m Phase I development of the Institute last year. Phase II will include the provision of a new 4,200m² state-of-the-art research building which will serve as a major hub for UCL biomedical research.
Housed within the Institute will be the new UCL Centre for Regenerative Medicine.
