Redland Solar PV tile paving the way for social housing

23 May 11 East Riding Council has specified Redland’s roof integrated Mini Stonewold Solar-PV tile for 100 houses as part of a social housing project in East Riding, Hull.

The Redland tiled dwellings are part of a large-scale development programme that consists of 331 houses across 33 sites within East Riding. Redland’s Mini Stonewold Solar PV tiles were fully integrated into the roofs, ensuring optimum weather tightness and a sleek finish whilst aiding mandatory compliance with level 4 of the CFSH.

Simon Button, Principle Architect for East Riding Council explains: ‘The East Riding of Yorkshire Council always focuses on good quality building materials for its projects taking into account appearance, durability and cost. The affordable housing scheme also promoted the use of Green Guide A+ rated building products. For all these reasons Redland was included in the project specification.’

He added: ‘The project had to comply with a rigorous set of design criteria, including the Code for Sustainable Homes, Lifetime Homes standard in new developments and the Secured by Design scheme.’

The development was initiated in 2009 when the Homes and Communities Agency awarded £20.162 million to East Riding Council to create £45million worth of affordable housing. The grant is the largest amount to be awarded in the UK as part of the government’s Local Authority New Build Initiative to create affordable housing.

The section of the project involving 100 houses with Redland’s Mini Stonewold Solar PV integrated tiles commenced in August 2010 and is currently nearing completion.
