Sainsbury first with CE marked steel

2 Jun 11 Billington Structures has begun construction of the UK’s first CE certified steel structure.

From 2013 all structural steelwork in the UK and Republic of Ireland will have to be CE marked to show conformity with European standards.

Billington Structures has started fabrication a single-storey braced frame for Sainsbury's Supermarkets at Heaton Park in Manchester, using CE marked steelwork.

CE marking requires the factory production control to be certified by an approved organisation. Billington Structures, which has been fabricating steel since 1947, demonstrated compliance with the new and more stringent European standards and was awarded CE mark accreditation on 1 May 2011.

Billington chief executive Steve Fareham said: "Billington places great significance on compliance with industry standards and sees the introduction of more stringent standards as a step forward for the industry.  Naturally, we're delighted that we have been able to satisfy the legal requirements and demonstrate compliance well ahead of the mandatory deadline of July 2013, and in doing so, become the first UK company to deliver CE marked steel for Sainsbury's new supermarket in Manchester."
