The project involves construction of additional storm water storage facilities at Wheatcroft sewage pumping station as well as a new 25-metre diameter, 35-metre deep storage shaft at Toll House pumping station.

The Morgan Sindall team will also construct diversion and reconnection tunnels between the existing sewer, Toll House pumping station and a new combined sewer overflow (CSO).

In addition, a new CSO will also be built at the Corner Café site while the existing pumping station at Scalby Mills pre-treatment facility will be extended and major pumps added. These will discharge into a new 800mm diameter rising main which will be laid for 2km over farmland up to the existing Scarborough waste water treatment works, where the team will construct three new settlement tanks and an ultraviolet treatment facility. The treated discharge will then pass through a further 2km of new 900mm diameter pipe to the existing sea outfall.

The completed project is expected to improve the quality of the water that is discharged into the sea during storms.

Jag Paddam, managing director of Infrastructure at Morgan Sindall, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this project which will use the expertise of both our infrastructure and tunnelling teams. This expertise has enabled us to optimise the scheme design and construction method to minimise disruption to the general public.

“We look forward to building on our successful working relationship with Yorkshire Water to deliver this scheme for the benefit of the local community.”

The design work is already underway, with construction due to start next week for completion in February 2014.

The Scarborough project has been awarded as part of the AMP5 Yorkshire Water framework, to which Morgan Sindall was appointed in August 2010. Projects under this framework range in value from £5m to £50m and include clean water and waste water projects from feasibility through design and construction to commissioning and handover.
