The company has been placed in the hands of administrators from KPMG.

Donaldson and McConnell was formed in 1991, near Grangemouth, Scotland, after a management buy out of glulam importers Swedspan UK.

The firm continued to import and distribute glulam products to timber suppliers throughout the UK and Ireland. More recently it came to specialise in the design, supply and erection of complex timber and glulam roof structures.

Donaldson and McConnell, which had an annual turnover of £11.3m, had employed 114 people across its four locations.

As well as its head office in Bo'ness, near Granegmouth, where nearly half the staff were based, Donaldson and McConnell had regional operations in West Bromwich, Craigavon and Canterbury. It also had plans to open in Manchester.

Just nine staff have been retained at the main facility in Scotland to help fulfill existing orders. For the time being, two staff have also been retained in West Bromwich and one in Craigavon in Northern Ireland.

Blair Nimmo, head of restructuring for KPMG in Scotland, told the BBC: "In common with many companies that supply the construction sector, Donaldson and McConnell has experienced very challenging conditions in recent times, with the reduction in construction activity reducing demand for the group's products."

Administrators hope to complete some contracts and seek offers for others.
