The contractor was chosen for the two contracts – together worth £12m – through the council’s construction framework.

Seddon is building a new home for St Modwen’s Primary School, which is due for completion in early 2014.

It is also building the new Scientia Academy building with the first phase set to be completed by the end of August and the second phase by the end of December 2013.

Seddon is already working on a £4m project to deliver the new Christchurch Primary School in Burton-on-Trent.

Both the St Modwen’s Primary School development and the Scientia Academy are being built using a sustainable cross laminated timber frame construction system which is manufactured off-site.

The St Modwen’s Primary School development will enable the school to move from its current site to a new two-storey building on land off the Tutbury Road. It will make it possible for the school eventually to provide places for up to 420 pupils. The new building will include solar photovoltaic panels and a ground source heat pump.

The new Scientia Academy will create places for around 420 foundation and primary school stage pupils. It is being built at the former Belvedere Sports & Social Club site with a new entrance and exit to the school site set to be created off Mona Road. The project includes the redevelopment of the adjoining bowling club facilities through the construction of a new bowling club pavilion and upgrading of parking facilities.  A new access road also will be built for residents of Belvedere Road affected by the development.

Seddon managing director Jonathan Seddon said: “It is exciting to see work beginning on these projects which will help answer the need for more primary school places locally while delivering state-of-the-art educational facilities for pupils and teachers.”
