Skanska and Laing O’Rourke compete for Cheesegrater

9 Jun 11 The shortlist for the £290m main contract to build the Leadenhall Building in the City of London has been whittled down to two.

It is understood that the competition is now between Skanska and Laing O’Rourke, with Sir Robert McAlpine and Mace eliminated. The main contract is expected to be awarded in the next couple of months. Demolition and preliminary basement works have already been completed.

The 47-storey structure, dubbed the Cheesegrater because of its tapered profile, will provide 610,000 sq ft of office, retail and leisure space. At 224m high, it will be one of the tallest buildings in the Square Mile. The total development cost is expected to be around £340m.

Practical completion to shell and core is expected in the second quarter of 2014.

The project client is British Land in joint venture with Oxford Properties, the real estate arm of a Canadian pension fund.
