Station win gives Indian contractor entry into Hong Kong

8 Jan 13 India’s Punj Lloyd Group has broken into the Hong Kong market with a Rs1168 crore (£132m) contract to build MTR Corporation’s Shatin to Central Link Diamond Hill station.

Punj Lloyd’s Singapore-based company Sembawang Engineers and Constructors will carry out the work with consortium partner, Leader Civil Engineering.

The station will provide an interchange between the new Shatin to Central Link and the existing Diamond Hill Station servicing the Kwun Tong Line.

“We are delighted to win this project, which is a significant breakthrough for Sembawang in Hong Kong," said Sembawang president and CEO Richard Grosvenor.

The scope of work includes the relocation of heritage structures and archaeological digs, construction of a 250m-long by 30m-deep underground station and connecting adits to the existing station, together with coordination with interfacing railway operating systems and specialist contractors. Modifications to the adjacent existing live station will also be required to aid the flow of passengers.

Work on the Diamond Hill Station will start in the first quarter of this year, in line with the commissioning of the first phase of the Shatin to Central Link. That link will eventually provide a direct connection between the stations on the border with mainland China’s Guangzhou Province and Admiralty Station, located in the heart of the central business district of Hong Kong Island.
