Stepnell secures top construction industry award for Earl Mortimer College scheme

19 Apr 11 Construction company Stepnell has received a bronze Considerate Constructors Scheme award for its sensitive and environmentally-friendly approach to work on a pioneering new college building in Leominster, Herefordshire.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards recognise construction sites displaying excellent standards of consideration towards their workforce, their neighbours and the environment.

Stepnell received the award for its approach to the construction of Earl Mortimer College, a £20 million Building Schools for the Future Pathfinder project to design and build new college facilities to replace the existing Minster College in Leominster for Herefordshire Council. This is the second consecutive year in which the company has been rewarded by the Considerate Constructors Scheme for its work at Earl Mortimer College, having also achieved a bronze award in 2010.

Stepnell construction manager Alan Lyons accepted the award on the company’s behalf at a specially-arranged ceremony held at the Lowry Hotel in Salford, Manchester.

To gain the Considerate Constructors Scheme award, the development at Earl Mortimer College was independently monitored against the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s Site Code of Considerate Practice which requires companies to minimise the impact of construction work on the local environment, work safely and liaise closely with the local community.

“To win this award two years in a row is an excellent reward for the hard work and dedication of our project team and I’d like to thank them for their efforts,” says Mark Wakeford, Stepnell managing director. “Much of the work at Earl Mortimer College was carried out during term time so the team had to take the utmost care to ensure that both staff and students could continue their day-to-day activities safely and with the minimum of disruption.”

“This is a great reflection on the work Stepnell carried out on behalf of Herefordshire Council,” says Chris Baird of Herefordshire Council. “Pupils in Leominster and the community are already benefiting from the excellent new buildings which resulted from a very positive working relationship between the council, the school and Stepnell throughout the project.”

“I am delighted to report that 2011 has seen a new record in the number of awards being presented,” says Robert Biggs, chairman of the Considerate Constructors Scheme. “It is testament to the ongoing commitment of our industry to ever-improving standards that through these hard times best practice initiatives continue to evolve. The Scheme’s 2011 National Site Awards are an opportunity for us to recognise and reward the outstanding levels of performance witnessed by our monitors in 2010. I would like to take this opportunity to personally congratulate all of this year’s winners for their continued hard work in ever improving the working practices of UK sites.”
