Metal theft fell during 2012 thanks to initiatives including Operation Tornado. The association points to the success of the multi-agency initiative, which required anyone selling scrap metal to provide photographic proof of identity.
Nationwide there has been a 43.7% reduction in metal theft. The smallest regional fall was in West Midlands, at 8%, while Scotland has seen a 64% reduction.
The association points to the effectiveness of measures such as CCTV coupled with the new legislation that will outlaw cash payments and require all scrap metal dealers to be licensed.
