Supermarkets blamed for contractor’s demise

9 Apr 13 Administrators have been appointed to take over Newport-based contractor S Dudley & Sons Limited.

The company was established in 1920 and had a track record working for high profile retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

According to the directors, the company had suffered a sustained period of difficult trading in which margins had been increasingly depressed by its clients in the retail sector.

The company had previously announced that job losses were likely among the 43-strong workforce.

The aluminium cladding operation of S Dudley & Sons, which was established in 1993 and employs 42 staff, is a separate stand-alone company called Dudley’s Aluminium Limited. This is unaffected by the closure of S Dudley & Sons and continues in business. Dudley’s Aluminium, based in Cardiff, is an authorised manufacturer for Kawneer, Metal technology, Schuco and Technal

Peter Dewey and David Hill, partners at at the Cardiff office of insolvency firm Begbies Traynor, have been appointed administrators of S Dudley & Sons.

Peter Dewey said: “S Dudley & Sons Limited is yet another victim of the continuing difficulties in the construction sector.”
