The seven-year project involves work to both the interior and exterior of the 120-year-old building, which is owned by the not-for-profit Corporation of Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall.
Turner & Townsend will guide the owner through the planning, design, construction and occupancy of the landmark building.
Deane Cameron, president and CEO for the Corporation of Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall, said: “The restoration project marks the beginning of an important journey for this remarkable Canadian cultural institution. Massey Hall is not only a national historic icon that we all treasure, but a place where the world will continue to experience music history as it is made.
“Our strong relationship with Turner & Townsend, which has consistently shown a deep understanding of our needs, was key to their appointment in the role of project manager. Their specialist knowledge, capability and experience in driving change - and exceptional past performance - gave us complete confidence on a successful delivery for future generations of music lovers.”
Gerard McCabe, managing director for Turner & Townsend Canada, said that the company had worked with the client over the past three years overcoming municipal, neighbour, legal and government funding challenges. He added: “Our proven ability of restoring historic buildings and performing arts spaces around the world coupled with close working relationships with stakeholders and key decision makers stands us in good stead for delivering the planning and construction of Phase 2 and meeting the Corporation’s objective to ‘improve everything, change nothing’.”
