Tarmac takes £60m Notts highways deal

7 Feb 13 Tarmac has been awarded a highway maintenance contract from Nottinghamshire County Council that is worth an initial £60m and could double to £120m.

The contract, which involves the delivery of a range of highways services including resurfacing, gulley cleaning, street lighting, road marking and earthworks, runs for an initial five years from 1 April 2013. There is an option to extend by a further five years on completion.

Tarmac’s National Contracting division will work in partnership with the council’s in-house highways team and is expected to deliver efficiency savings of more than £2m a year.

Tarmac has a long-standing relationship with Nottinghamshire County Council and experience across the East Midlands region through the Midlands Highways Alliance and the Leicestershire Highways Works Alliance.

Tarmac National Contracting managing director Paul Fleetham said: “This achievement reflects our strong track record of working in partnership with councils and local authorities to successfully deliver strategic, long-term contracts on significant highways networks.

“Against a challenging economic backdrop and cuts to highways budgets, innovative partnerships between the private and public sectors are key. We have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Nottinghamshire County Council and our work with the Council will continue to demonstrate a cost-effective approach, helping to unlock efficiency savings as well as providing a first-class highways service for the county.”

Councillor Richard Jackson, Chairman of the county council’s highways and transport committee, said: “I am delighted that we are able to announce this new highways contract with Tarmac. I am particularly pleased that under its terms 90% of the work will be carried out using the local workforce and suppliers and that it will allow some £2m to be reinvested back into our highways network where it will be used to carry out much-needed maintenance work such as repairs to potholes.”

Since January 2013 Tarmac National Contracting is a subsidiary of Lafarge Tarmac, a 50:50 joint venture between French building materials group Lafarge and minerals giant Anglo American.
