Three schemes kick off £1.4bn roads spend

13 Apr 11 Work is set to start on three major road schemes in the next 12 months after the Highways Agency confirmed the construction timetable for 14 projects that will begin by 2015.

The Highways agency has allocated £1.4bn to start work on the schemes.

Improvements to the M62 in West Yorkshire, the M4/M5 around Bristol and on the A23 in West Sussex will begin in the next 12 months - reducing congestion, improving safety and journey times, and providing a boost to the UK economy, said roads minister Mike Penning.

A further three schemes - on the M1 near Sheffield, M6 around Birmingham and A11 in Norfolk - will start in the financial year 2012-2013, he also confirmed today as he published the timetable for the 14 major road Highways Agency schemes due to start construction by 2015.

Between now and March 2015, the Highways Agency will, subject to statutory processes, start work on three projects in 2011/2012:
