UK planners win competition for 1,000ha Russian park

16 Jan 14 A consortium headed by developer Cushman & Wakefield has been selected as the winner of a contest for the development of Park Russia, 30km south of Moscow.

Masterplanning for the entry was carried out by a UK-based design team led by Gillespies, with Buro Happold responsible for the engineering.

The competition was organised by the Russia Geographic Society and Moscow Region Governmen. Park Russia is 1,000ha tourism and cultural project near Domodedovo airport.

The consortium’s winning proposals provided the jury with a masterplan and business strategy showing three main zones of the park and opportunities for investment in leisure projects. As well as day visitors, the park is intended to create a resort destination where large numbers of visitors will stay in the park. The business strategy shows a 12 year investment period, principally by the private sector.

The development is to have strong ‘green’ building credentials and the aim is to optimise rail access to cope a potential 10 million visitors a year.

The UK-based masterplanning team was made up of Gillespies, Buro Happold, Rider Levett Bucknall, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios & Fourth Street Place Consultants.
