Underground protection thanks to Foamglas

11 Feb 11 Foamglas cellular glass insulation from Pittsburgh Corning has provided a unique solution for the redevelopment of the Thamesmead Sporting Club in East London.

The new club has been designed to replace the previous building and will provide a high quality sporting and leisure facility at the heart of the community.

“The Thamesmead Sporting Club offers a unique design,” comments Saville Jones Architects.  “Two thirds of the building is submerged underground which meant selecting insulation was particularly tricky,” they continued.

The centre’s location and subterranean design meant it was crucial to prevent water ingress and damp.  In order to help meet this challenge, Saville Jones Architects specified over 73 cubic metres of Foamglas, thanks to its unique feature and benefits.  More specifically, because Cellular glass insulation such as Foamglas is totally impervious to moisture.

Manufactured using pure glass and a small element of carbon, Foamglas comprises millions of hermetically sealed glass cells, which are completely resistant to the effects of liquid moisture and water vapour as water cannot enter the closed cell structure.  Even when installed underground and below the water table, cellular glass insulation will remain unaffected by moisture.

Saville Jones Architects concluded, “There’s no doubt that the partially submerged development at Thamesmead created a demanding environment that presented unique challenges.  Therefore it was vital we selected an insulation that could withstand potential moisture ingress- and Foamglas did just this.”
