Union fights for Elliott employees

31 May 11 Construction union Ucatt is seeking assurances that the 250 workers formerly employed by failed contractor P Elliott on the Olympic Village project will be fully paid.

The workers have not been paid since the company, which was building one of the plots on the Olympic Village, was forced into administration on 19 May.

It has since been agreed that Lend Lease, principal contractor for the Olympic Village, will take over the stalled project and restart work next Monday (6 June), re-employing the existing workforce.

However neither Lend Lease nor the Olympic Delivery Authority nor the Delivery Partner (CLM) has confirmed that the affected workers will have their pay guaranteed for the work that they had already undertaken or for the period since P Elliott entered administration.

Ucatt says it will step up its campaign if no agreement has been reached by the time the workforce returns to the site next Monday.

Ucatt  regional secretary Jerry Swain said: “The key players have taken the first step in resolving these problems by guaranteeing the affected workforce a return to work. However, it is imperative that they now ensure that the workers are also paid for the work that they had already done and for the time since Elliott’s went bust. This will help to ensure that this part of the Olympic Village project can be brought back on track as swiftly as possible.”
