Union welcomes Labour’s apprentice plan

27 Mar 14 Construction union Ucatt has welcomed a commitment from the Labour party to reintroduce a requirement for builders to train apprentices on all publicly-funded projects.

Labour’s shadow housing minister Emma Reynolds told a Home Builders Federation (HBF) conference this week that the next Labour government would re-introduce rules requiring house-builders to recruit and train apprentices on all publicly funded housing projects.

The last Labour government introduced this as a requirement under Homes & Community Agency rules in 2008 but the coalition government scrapped it in 2010.

Ucatt general secretary Steve Murphy said: “This important commitment is welcome. Labour understands that employers can’t be trusted to train sufficient apprentices and public procurement rules must be introduced to ensure that young workers receive high quality training.”
