Unions ballot Morrison members in Leeds

5 Apr 13 Construction union Ucatt has begun a consultative ballot of members working at Morrison Facilities Services in Leeds.

The Unite and GMB unions are also conducting consultative ballots of their members at the company.

The company, now owned by Mears, has more than 250 employees and carries out responsive and planned maintenance work on more than 70% of Leeds council properties.

The dispute concerns potential redundancies and changes in pay that could cost some employees several thousand pounds per year, the unions claim.

The union also claims a lack of consultation by management.

Ucatt acting regional secretary Rob Morris said: “Workers are furious with the way that they are being treated by Morrison’s management. This is no way to treat a loyal and dedicated workforce.”

Ucatt members at the company, of which there are more than 50, will begin to receive their ballot forms from today (5 April); the deadline for returning ballots is 17 April. If members strongly support industrial action and the problems are not resolved through negotiation, an industrial action ballot could follow.

Ucatt representatives have a meeting scheduled with Morrison’s management for next week. The union has also met with Leeds councillors and has a meeting scheduled with senior council officials for April 19th.

Mr Morris added: “Morrison’s management need to understand that this problem is not going to go away and enter into proper negotiations with the trade unions. These problems are directly a result of the failure of management to consult and negotiate.”
