Veidekke to build hospital car park in rock caverns

14 Mar 14 Veidekke has signed a NOK100m (£10.1m) contract to create rock caverns and an access tunnel for a hospital car park in Norway.

The contract with Bergen Diakonissehjem Foundation will provide parking for 345 vehicles at Haraldsplass Diakonale Sykehus in Bergen.

Creating the car park involves building a 90m access tunnel leading to two parallel rock caverns, each of which will be 85n in length. There will be parking on three levels in both caverns. In addition, Veidekke will build a 100m pedestrian tunnel that subsequently will be linked to a new ward.

"Cavern parking facilities are not new to Veidekke in Bergen,” said Veidekke district manager Ingmar Austevoll. “We built the Kloster garage with 940 parking spaces, which opened in 2005, and we are currently building 1,500 parking spaces in rock beneath Sartor Senter that will be completed in November.”

Construction work starts in June, and everything is scheduled for completion in October 2015.
