VHE turns old gasworks site into park

17 Jan 11 VHE has begun work on a £5.2m contract to construct the Millennium Town Park in Jersey’s St Helier.

The redevelopment of the 1.3 hectare former gas works car park is the largest remediation contract ever to be undertaken on the island.

First part of the contract involves excavation and treatment of contaminated material. It will be treated using bio-physical segregation and separation and reused during construction of the park.

Material too heavily contaminated for treatment on site will be transported by barge to a specialist waste processing facility in the Netherlands where it will be cleaned and reused to form cinder blocks for the building industry.

The existing car park surface and underlying hardcore base will be stripped and crushed. This will then be transported to the La Collette Reclamation Area as part of the reclamation of the St Helier foreshore for future development.

After the remediation process is complete, clean material will be brought to the site for construction of the park.

The park will include water features, sheltered areas, a children's play area and sport facilities.

VHE managing director Steve Stiff said: “This project will eliminate the historical pollution produced during the operation of the gas works and provide a secure environmental future for the site. We will be working closely with the Jersey authorities to ensure that we use resources efficiently to deliver a sustainable and cost-effective amenity for the island.”

Completion is scheduled for the autumn.
