Virginia plans $2.3bn transport spend

23 Jan 13 The US state of Virginia has announced its 2013 transportation funding proposals, which would provide for 158 highway projects statewide and US$1.07bn (£675m) for new rail and transit projects.

The proposal from governor Bob McDonnell would provide the Virginia Department of Transportation with approximately US$1.28bn (£808m) in new state funding that could be used for 158 highway projects. The proposal will also provide US$1.07bn in new funds for rail and transit projects. In addition, the plan would prevent approximately US$500m of projects in the existing six year improvement program from being delayed due to a downturn in revenue projections.

McDonnell said: “The recommended list of transportation infrastructure projects represents a significant down payment on Virginia's transportation future.”

The projects include an extension of the Dulles Metrorail, new highway interchanges, bridge replacements and rail track improvements.

Funding for the projects is in addition to the funding in the Commonwealth Transportation Board's current six-year improvement programme.
