White Van Roadshow focuses on preventing falls

13 May 11 This year's HSE White Van Roadshow to the north west is focusing on preventing workplace falls after six workers were killed and there were more than 500 major injuries in the region in 2009/10.

Specialists from the construction industry and the HSE will visit seven building sites and two colleges in the North West. They are spending a day at each location to meet as many construction workers, apprentices and students as possible.

As well as warning of the dangers of working at height, other topics will include power tool vibration injuries, asbestos and other dust-related diseases.

Those attending the events will also get the chance to take part in practical demonstrations on safety equipment. "We hope this tour of colleges and construction sites in the north west will help to prevent some of the hundreds of deaths and serious injuries we deal with every year,” said HSE principal inspector for construction Polly Tomlinson. Latest figures show that 545 workers in the north west suffered major injuries as a result of falls last year. "All of the advice is being provided for free so I'd encourage people to give up less than an hour of their time to come along. They could end up saving someone's life."
