Willmott Dixon ready to start on Bedford Academy site

4 Apr 11 Planning permission has been granted for the new £22.5m Bedford Academy following design work by preferred bidder Willmott Dixon, Bond Bryan Architects and the school.

Construction on the Mile Road site in Bedford will now start in the next few weeks, with a schedule that sees the building ready for occupation in September 2012.

Client for the project is Bedford Borough Council.

The school, sponsored by Harpur Trust and Bedford College, will specialise in science and technology and have a capacity of 1,440 students.

The building is designed with a central communal hub with a glazed atrium and four spokes as ‘learning villages’.

Willmott Dixon managing director Chris Tredget says: “Our team has been working hard alongside Bond Bryan to develop the design for the planning application, which we are pleased has been approved. We are very enthusiastic about the opportunities the building facilities will provide for staff, students and our wider community.”

Other consultants on the project include:
• M&E/acoustic/Fire: Fulcrum/Mott Mac Donald
• Landscape architect: Form
• Educationalist/ICT: WSP Edunova
• Structural engineer: Dewhurst Macfarlane.
