The project was initially part of the Building Schools for the Future programme that was cancelled in 2010. The contract was procured through the local authority procurement company Scape.

Willmott Dixon said that the school, designed by Sheppard Robson and engineered by Mouchel, would be “an exemplar of sustainable features”, with a solar panelled roof to generate electricity.

Subject to planning permission being granted, a new school building will go up on the former Long Lane council depot to create more space and better access than the current site in Walton.

The intention is to have it ready in time for the start of the academic year in September 2014.
