Winner announced for $2bn Australian rail scheme

22 Feb 16 A joint venture of Salini Impregilo and NRW has been named as preferred respondent to design, construct and maintain the Forrestfield-Airport Link in Perth, Australia.

The scheme represents a AU$2bn (£992m) investment in public transport to connect Perth's growing eastern foothills to the central business district via Perth Airport.

Salini Impregilo - NRW Joint Venture (SI-NRW JV) was selected from a shortlist of three.    It beat Forrestfield Connect (made up of Acciona Infrastructure, BAM International and Ferrovial Agroman) and JHL JV (John Holland and Leighton Contractors).

Transport minister Dean Nalder said negotiations to finalise the contract by May 2016 would now begin between SI-NRW JV and the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia. "This is an incredibly exciting time for a project that will change the way the people of Perth, and in particular Perth's eastern foothills, travel to our city,” he said. "Planning for this transformational project is well advanced."

Last year, the state parliament passed a bill for the project and, at the Forrestfield station site, forward works for service relocations have been under way since December 2015. Construction is set to begin later this year.
