The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has suspended work at the site and is investigating the cause, as well as carrying out inspections at its other sites.
The fire department said that the lattice boom of a crawler crane came apart in two pieces, one about 12m long and the other of 24m.
Reports suggest that the boom suddenly dropped, indicating catastrophic failure of the wire rope supporting the main boom.
