PA Wright & Sons specialises in handling and recycling bio solids, both in liquid and cake form, and works at a lot of Severn Trent’s sewage treatment works.

The new additions to the fleet include three Volvo EC140C excavators together with a Volvo L70F and L120F loading shovels. “The shovels are deployed at the treatment works in both load and carry operations and loading out material into bulk tippers for onward recycling,” said Tony Wright. “We use the excavators to stockpile material at the receiving end of the cycle before it’s spread on fields as organic fertilizer.”

In total the company will handle in the region of 500,000t of bio solids a year.

To minimise damage to fields in the spreading operation the excavators have specially modified buckets with an increase in capacity and a rounded bar on the leading edge of the bucket lip.

All the machines are fitted with CareTrack telematics systems providing machine data and systems status. Especially relevant and useful to Tony Wright is the ability to carry out spot checks on each individual machine’s fuel levels, particularly on the excavators that are vulnerable to fuel theft and vandalism whilst on remote farmland.
