Balfour Beatty wins US law school contract

14 Feb 13 Balfour Beatty Construction is to carry out demolition and construction work for the new campus of Charlotte School of Law in North Carolina.

As the project’s general contractor, Balfour Beatty Construction’s work will include 10 floors in the 27-storey, Charlotte Plaza building, representing a total of 195,976 square feet. The new campus will not only expand the size of the school’s facilities, which are currently located on Charlotte’s west side, but also allow students easier access to county and federal courts, law firms and businesses in the centre city area.

Balfour Beatty Construction is carrying out demolition and fit-out work for retail spaces on the first and second floors of the Charlotte Plaza building as well as the complete demolition and build-out of the fourth to 11th floors. The new facilities will house all of the law school’s students and facilities, including classrooms with tiered seating, office and administrative support spaces, mock courtrooms with jury deliberation rooms and a law library on the fourth and fifth floors.

“The new facilities will create an ideal learning environment for students and staff while unifying the campus in a convenient, urban setting,” said Pat Dean, president of Balfour Beatty Construction’s Carolinas division. “Charlotte School of Law is an important resource for our community and the legal profession. We are honoured to serve as a trusted advisor for one of our city’s premier educational institutions.”
