The current Frenchay Church of England Primary School will be replaced with a two-storey, two-form entry school on the grounds of the former Frenchay Hospital.
The expanded, relocated school will eventually accommodate up to 420 primary-age children, following the development of almost 500 new homes in the area.
Bam Construction was awared the contract by South Gloucestershire Council under the Southern Construction Framework (SCF).
The new school building has been designed to achieve low-carbon Passivhaus standards with triple glazing, solar panels, insulated thermal fabric and heat recovery units. Groundworks have now been completed and construction work is already under way with a planned opening for September 2022.
Bam built what it claims to be the UK’s first Passivhaus primary school, in Exeter, and was behind the first assessment of embodied and operational carbon at a primary school, at King Ina School in Taunton, which was completed a few months ago.
Bam Construction western regional director Tim Chell said: “We are using digital modelling and 4D planning to deliver a progressive, net zero design solution that will give the pupils and staff of Frenchay Primary School an enhanced and sustainable learning environment now and for generations to come.”
As part of its ‘social value’ pitch, Bam will also tidy up the village pond.
